Insurrection based on a lie

Insurrection based on a lie

Insurrection is defined as “the act or an instance of revolting esp. violently against civil or political authority or against an established government”. Seems to describe well the events of January 6 in our Capitol. And was based on Donald Trump’s lie and his direction to his followers.

An Insurrection based on a lie.

The NY Times put together a video of the attack on our Capitol and it is well worth watching.

Although Republicans have blocked a bipartisan Congressional inquiry into the insurrection, the House has been able to form a select committee to learn what went wrong and how we can fix it.

What part of all do you not understand?

What part of all do you not understand?

The vast majority of Senate Republicans voted to prevent the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Their position was that a trial is unconstitutional because Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Many voted to acquit for that reason despite the Senate voting it was constitutional.

If this view stood is that any future President (and others) could do something that is clearly wrong, be impeached by the House, and then never face trial or be convicted by simply resigning before the Senate starts the trial.

2021 impeachment may have consequences

2021 impeachment may have consequences

A few days ago I wrote about Republicans who believe the 2021 impeachment of Donald Trump is unconstitutional because Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Impeachment has been done before under these circumstances, but never for a president. Yesterday his lawyers did their best to present their case that this is unconstitutional.

Unfortunately for the ex-president, they did not do a very good job. Continue reading “2021 impeachment may have consequences”

The vast majority of Senate Republicans voted to prevent the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection in the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Their position was than a trial is unconstitutional because Mr. Trump is no longer in office.

The problem is if this view stood is that any future President (and perhaps others) could do something that is clearly wrong, be impeached by the House, and then never face trial or be convicted by simply resigning before the Senate starts the trial. Do Senate Republicans favor no consequences for any act against the United States if the person is smart enough to resign before going to trial? Is this any way to run a country?

Is it time to impeach yet?

Is it time to impeach yet?

Back in September I thought President Trump should be impeached for his refusal to commit to peaceful transition of power if was is not re-elected. Now that his refusal and associated events has lead to a terrorist attack on our Capitol is it time to impeach yet?

It’s only the beginning of the Capitol terror hunt

It’s only the beginning of the Capitol terror hunt

Federal prosecutors in the District of Columbia are beginning to find and charge some those who invaded the Capitol on January 6 (1/6 if need a short term). The apparent goal of the terrorists was to overturn the results of the 2020 election. They failed.

Biden is better for your health

Biden is better for your health

I think Joe Biden is the best choice. There are quite a few reasons but for now I’ll focus on the most immediate problem. About 230,000 Americans have died of COVID-19 in recent months. Biden is better for your health.

Accelerating death rate from COVID-19

Accelerating death rate from COVID-19

I noted earlier this morning that President Trump’s America First policy is working in COVID-19 area. In the past 24 hours we led the world in new COVID-19 cases and deaths. We are also a leader in cumulative death from the coronavirus.

Biden is Better

Biden is Better

I used to subscribe to The Economist and I am thinking of re-subscribing. I still get their email newsletters. It is a great magazine. I found it sensible and centrist with a bit of humor.

They cover the world and are based in the UK so naturally their perspective on US events is a bit different from the American media. There was so much to read and all of it was well-written that I constantly found myself running a few issues behind. So I was very interested in their take on the upcoming presidential election.

Is Donald Trump the David Duke of this decade ?

Is Donald Trump the David Duke of this decade ?

In 2016 Donald Trump said he did not know who David Duke is. He was asked because David Duke, a former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan who ran for the Senate, supported him in the election for President.

I knew about David Duke since I was living in Georgia in 1990 when he ran for the Senate from Louisiana and almost won. It seemed kind of a big deal and I assume it was national news. Somehow Mr. Trump missed it. Or maybe he just forgot or was just untruthful.

Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism

Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism

I am reading Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum on my Kindle. I have been alarmed by the rise in anti-democratic beliefs in the United States including various types of authoritarianism. I decided to read this book because I had read several articles by Anne Applebaum in The Atlantic. More about this later.

I live in Pennsylvania, a swing state

I live in Pennsylvania, a swing state

I live in Pennsylvania. Being in a swing state has both advantages and disadvantages.

On the plus side our votes for President are important.

On the minus side, we probably get more political ads than other folks. And this year there is another big negative. President Trump has held several rallies around the state.

The wartime President’s war is on Americans

The wartime President’s war is on Americans

President Donald Trump calls himself a “wartime president.” Now we know the war is on Americans.

Mark Meadows, the President’s chief of staff, has told us the administration “not going to control” the coronavirus pandemic. President Trump continues to fail us in addressing this pandemic. There are about 225,000 American killed by the virus and President Trump continues to lie and misinform Americans on the COVID-19 pandemic.
