Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism

I am reading Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Applebaum on my Kindle. I have been alarmed by the rise in anti-democratic beliefs in the United States including various types of authoritarianism. I decided to read this book because I had read several articles by Anne Applebaum in The Atlantic. More about this later.

I am finding the book very interesting and enjoyable. As expected, it does make me worry about the future of the United States. So far the discussion has included several countries and general issues. I am looking forward to what she has to say about the United States. As those of you who read this blog have surely noticed that I think President Trump is an authoritarian who is a threat to our democracy. I also think he is incompetent and unfit for the presidency.

I have written about various articles in The Atlantic. I subscribe to the magazine and get their newsletter. I think the newsletter is free but I’m not sure. Anyway, I enjoy the newsletter and often find worthwhile articles there before they are published in the print magazine and many that do not make it into print.

I thought I had written about one of Anne Applebaum’s articles a few months ago. But I searched this blog and didn’t see it. Perhaps I just dreamt that I had written about it. If you have any interest in the question of why people collaborate with governments they do not agree with, it is well worth reading.

The article is History Will Judge the Complicit: Why have Republican leaders abandoned their principles in support of an immoral and dangerous president? and you can find it at
