Consequences if Republicans overturn the Affordable Care Act

Consequences if Republicans overturn the Affordable Care Act

President Trump and other Republicans want to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This seem especially worrisome since Republicans have not offered an alternative. Consequences for quite a few American were mentioned in my previous post (Repeal ACA now and maybe replace later ).

In addition to the 20-23 million Americans who would lose their medical insurance mentioned in that post there are other consequences. Under the ACA, Medicaid was expanded to include more low income people if the state agreed. These people would become uninsured.

Making the COVID-19 pandemic worse

Making the COVID-19 pandemic worse

In a series of great moves, President Trump seems to be trying to make the current pandemic worse for all Americans, especially middle class and poor Americans.

Millions are unemployed and over 140,000 Americans are dead. It did not have to be this bad.

Repeal ACA now and maybe replace later

Repeal ACA now and maybe replace later

President Trump has joined with other Republican officials in a lawsuit asking the Supreme Court to overturn the Affordable Care Act (ACA). (see Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Strike Down Affordable Care Act.)

A brief quote from that article:

If successful, the move would permanently end the health insurance program popularly known as Obamacare and wipe out coverage for as many as 23 million Americans.

Health Care: Meet the American Dream

Health Care: Meet the American Dream

Health Care: Meet the American Dream by Janis Powers is a great read for anyone with an interest in health care.  Since healthcare is one of the most contentious issues in recent years I hope this book finds a large audience.

The United States has a very complicated system which has the highest costs in the world but relatively poor outcomes. Clearly major changes are needed.

Hawley healthcare hypocrisy in Missouri

Hawley healthcare hypocrisy in Missouri

Today I wish to focus on one especially disturbing case of healthcare hypocrisy by Josh Hawley who is running for a US Senate seat in Missouri. My recent posts have focused on Republican hypocrisy on healthcare, specifically the pre-exiting conditions safeguard built into the Affordable Care Act (ACA) or Obamacare. In these posts I have described recent Republican dishonest claims of support for this important safeguard while their actions actions attempt to undermine it.

I find Josh Hawley to be a particularly disturbing healthcare hypocrite. He now claims to be in favor of pre-existing condition coverage. I find Hawley’s actions as Missouri Attorney General inconsistent with that claim.

Details: GOP healthcare big lie

Details: GOP healthcare big lie

More on the GOP Big Lie on healthcare. Apparently, several Republicans have recently used a lie about a Washington Post ‘Fact Check’ to support the GOP healthcare big lie.

GOP big lie on healthcare

GOP big lie on healthcare

The GOP is rolling out the Big Lie. Sure there have been plenty of lies in the past couple years but this seems to be the biggest, boldest, and most absurd. The Republicans now claim they will protect health care and specifically mention pre-existing conditions.

Bipartisan healthcare plan

Bipartisan healthcare plan

Are we ready to try for a bipartisan healthcare plan ?

The Senate’s Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 has not yet been passed. Senate Leader Mitch McConnell developed his plan in secret and was then not able to get the 50 votes he needed to get it through the Senate by the July 4 recess.

The Majority leader is still working toward 50 and probably modifying the Bill to help get there. It is a very tricky task modifying it to make it more palatable to extremely conservative Senators without adding some provisions that will cause the loss of support of other Senators.

Interesting reconciliation process. (Fun with Healthcare)

Interesting reconciliation process. (Fun with Healthcare)

Assuming Mitch McConnell is able to twist enough arms in the weeks ahead, we may see an interesting reconciliation process. Of course it could be done in secret which would take most of the fun out of it. But we may be set for an interesting debate.

The House has already passed the American Health Care Act of 2017 which the Congressional Budget Office estimates would throw about 23 million off the healthcare insurance rolls by 2026.

The Senate’s Better Care Reconciliation Act of 2017 has not yet been passed. In present form the Congressional Budget Office estimates it will increase the number of people who are uninsured by 22 million in 2026.

If the Senate bill is passed, we will see the reconciliation process. Perhaps there will be an argument about whether it is better to increase the uninsured by 22 or 23 million.

Heathcare secret plan from Republican Senators

Heathcare secret plan from Republican Senators

Do you want to know a secret? A big healthcare secret. Our Senate has one. Neither you, nor I, nor most Senators know the plan. As far as I know, no healthcare experts have seen it. I think the only people in the loop are Majority Leader Senator Mitch McConnell and 12 other Republican Senators.

The plan could have large economic effects. After all, health care is a big piece of our economy. As far as I know, no economists have seen it. Have the possible economic effects been considered?

If this works out well for the Republican party, will secrecy be the new model for legislating?

The secret plan for your healthcare

The secret plan for your healthcare

It’s a secret plan. I don’t know anything about the Senate healthcare plan except that it is a closely held secret among Senator Mitch McConnell and and handful of other Republican Senators. I suspect a few other Republicans may know part of the plan, at least in broad outline. But I don’t think the majority of Republican Senators know much about it. It seem fairly certain that Democrats are not in on the big secret.

I suppose at some point the public may know about it but probably not until after (or maybe just before) the vote. Senators will probably be informed of the contents before voting. I think that is a rule but I could be wrong. The Senate under Mitch McConnell had surprised me before.

Party discipline wins and Americans lose

Party discipline wins and Americans lose

Party discipline wins, President Trump wins, Speaker Ryan wins, Republicans win, most rich people win, millions of Americans lose. In a remarkable display of party unity, House Republicans singlehandedly passed a Heath Care Bill with no democratic support.

Thus it would seem the Democrats are the losers. But in the bigger analysis, it was the American people who lost. Well, most Americans and American ideals. A few people at the top of the economic ladder do get big tax cuts if this becomes law.

Trumpcare 2.0, it’s even worse

Trumpcare 2.0, it’s even worse

Trumpcare 2.0 is in the works. The first attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare with Trumpcare was so bad and so opposed that it failed before even coming to a vote.

For a short while it seemed the President had learn and would work with Democrats and moderate Republicans to find a good replacement. Then he decided to skip healthcare and move on to tax reform.

Why health insurance across state lines makes no sense to me

Why health insurance across state lines makes no sense to me

Republicans have long championed allowing consumers to buy health insurance across state lines and told us that this would somehow make insurance more affordable. This makes no sense to me.

In the recent failure of the Republican attempt to repeal and replace to Obamacare this was not included. The Republican plan was to first do the repeal and replace as a budget reconciliation bill which had lesser and follow that with other harder to pass stuff like selling health insurance across state lines. Since the first part could not pass, everthing is on temporary hold.

I’m sure the idea of selling health insurance across state lines will reappear. But it is a bad idea.
