Newspapers for genealogy

Newspapers for genealogy

I’ve been doing genealogy and finding things on family members for years. Over a year ago, I decided to try newspapers for genealogy.

Not exactly a new approach. I had used the occasional search of free resources. I did some research on the Library of Congress site. And the New York Times site. The Times does limit you if you don’t subscribe but we do so there was no problem.

I had found a few things Continue reading “Newspapers for genealogy”

FREE online newspaper article

Over the past couple weeks I wrote about finding online newspaper articles about a great grand uncle named Matthew H. Greer. I found several articles about his death and his will. Several articles from paid sites. But the final word on his will (at least so far) came from a newspaper I found in a free online newspaper article.

The free online newspaper article Continue reading “FREE online newspaper article”

U.S. Historic Newspapers at Library of Congress

U.S. Historic Newspapers at Library of Congress

One of the unexpected resources for genealogy that I found while researching Sadie Evahn of Spokane WA is the Library of Congress Historic Newspapers program.

Seems like they have thousands of newspapers published between 1836 and 1922. Some runs that they have preserved are relatively short and some longer. Many are microfilmed but a good number are online and searchable.

I got lucky Continue reading “U.S. Historic Newspapers at Library of Congress”

Google Newspaper Archive has not gone away

Google Newspaper Archive has not gone away

The Google Newspaper Archive has not gone away although many think it has. A few years ago, it was announced that Google was shutting down the Newspaper Archive project.

But reading further into the articles you may notice that while Google is no longer scanning newspapers to add to the archive, what was already done is still online and searchable.

The link http://news.google.com/newspapers will give you a list of newspapers in the archive and a search box. You can refine your search after the initial seach.

The link https://news.google.com/news/advanced_news_search?as_drrb=a takes you to a seach box that lets you refine your search right away.

I haven’t decide which I like better but give both a try. You may find nothing but then maybe you will find something worthwhile.
