Saving Republicans and Democracy

The Republican Party used to be highly principled and an important part of our democracy. But now they seem to favor various conspiracy theories, favor insurrection, and even oppose the very idea of democracy. That is why I was hopeful that the party could be saved as a valuable part of our democracy when a group of Republicans called “for the Republican Party to re-dedicate itself to founding ideals—or else hasten the creation of an alternative.” (see Save the Republican Party).

But it now seems the party is even more tightly aligned  with  Donald Trump and the irrational. An alternative party may be the answer.

The first time I wrote about this group was the Save the Republican Party post. The second time I was a bit discouraged since I had not heard anything so I asked Can the Republican Party be saved ?. Now they seem to have plan.

Since there seems little hope of fixing the existing party, a New Republican party may be in the cards for the Rational Republicans.  Until that can happen our best hope for keeping our democracy and the hope for a party of Rational Republicans seems to be electing moderate Democrats with an interest in bipartisanship.

So for now, the best hope for the rational remnants of the G.O.P. is for us to form an alliance with Democrats to defend American institutions, defeat far-right candidates, and elect honorable representatives next year — including a strong contingent of moderate Democrats.

quote from We Are Republicans. There’s Only One Way to Save Our Party From Pro-Trump Extremists.

Of course this is good for Rational Republicans. But is also seems good for a functioning democracy which will benefit most Americans. (Some irrational Republicans may not agree.)
