Trump purge continues with 4th IG

President Trump has continued his purge of Inspector Generals (IGs) who seem willing to investigate wrongdoing in his administration. State Department Inspector General Steve Linick is the 4th Inspector General fired in recent weeks.

The latest seems to have been related to an investigation into Mike Pompeo.

Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) tweeted

The firings of multiple Inspectors General is unprecedented. Doing so without good cause chills the independence essential to their purpose. It is a threat to accountable democracy and a fissure in the constitutional balance of power.

IGs play an essential role in our government. Commonly called watchdogs, they are supposed to be independent and identify problems. The Trump administration seems to have problems with the idea of accountability.

Are they taking advantage of our focus on the CODID-19 crisis to carry out a purge without too much public attention. Perhaps the fact the most of these things occurred on a Friday night is a hint.

Or may this is a distraction to take our attention away from President Trump’s failure on COVID-19 pandemic.

Sometimes it is hard to tell what are the distractions and the important stuff.

As always, watch what they do rather than what they say.
