Democratic debates on healthcare

So far I have watched all the Democratic party debates for the Presidential nomination for 2020. There a quite a few issues discussed but healthcare is a very common one. I think all the candidates have universal healthcare as a goal but differ on how they think the we can get there.

Some present detailed plans and the candidates disagree on which is best and spend a good bit of time in arguing about why my plan is better than your plan. And the questions from the moderators seem to encourage that type of argument.

My own feeling is that is just a waste of time. Most plans cannot be summarized adequately in a minute or so, perhaps with a few more minutes of follow-up discussion. It is extremely unlikely that any plan presented now will be identical to any plan after it goes through Congressional hearings and the legislative process.

So why debate details now? It is useful to know a candidates general approach but details are surely overkill.

I think if you favor universal healthcare the key question now is which candidate is most likely to move us toward that goal.

Of course before they can do that they will need to defeat Donald Trump and lead the Democratic party toward Congressional in both the House and Senate.
