Senator Toomey and a sensible gun law

I don’t often agree with U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.). But this time I do. He renewed his attempt of a few years ago to make our gun laws a bit more sensible.

A few years ago, Senators Toomey and Manchin proposed their sensible gun law after the massacre of school children in Newtown, CT. This was rejected and the sad story is in my post – Sensible gun laws lose

A few days ago, after the San Bernadino mass shooting, the Senate once again rejected the Manchin-Toomey proposal to make background checks universal.

The same day the Senate also rejected a plan to allow the government to delay delay firearms sales to suspected terrorists for up to 72 hours.

Neither universal background checks nor these delays allowing extended background check will stop all gun violence but these sensible gun law changes do make it a bit harder for the bad guys and may save lives.

I don’t think the Senators defeated these commonsense measures to make life easier for the bad guys, but that is what they did.

  1. I would be with you IF you could give me ONE reason how these new gun laws would stop a lanituc kid from stealing his mothers gun and going on a killing rampage. Find a REAL solution to the problem rather than a series of laws that just take guns away from law abiding citizens. Do you ACTUALLY think a criminal is going to walk into a gun dealer and try to purchase a gun ? Of course not. He’ll buy it off other thugs on the streets. You’re only doing damage to people that have legal rights to have arms.If I were a resident of Boston, I think I would have wanted a gun last week to protect my family in case that killer tried to get inside my house. There was a whole American city locked down, most of them with no protection. Think about that Obama. Gun ownership is a complex issue and we don’t need edicts. Criminals don’t buy guns legally and how do tell if someone is insane? Have a shrink examine everyone who wants to buy a gun? Not feasible.WAKE UP PEOPLE, THIS LAW WAS NOTHING BUT BULL CRAP !!!!!I normally support your causes, but definitely not in this situation. The right to bear arms is part of the constitutions checks and balances, and should not be messed with. I’ll not only vote for the candidates you’re against, but I’ll help throw the candidates that are with you out of office.

  2. My view is that background checks make sense but would make much more sense if there weren’t loopholes that allowed people to legally purchase guns while avoiding the background check. you are right in that this proposal would not stop illegal purchases. But why make it easy for the bad guys.
