Reading now: How Democracies Die

I was reading an article that mentioned How Democracies Die by Steven Levitsky and Daniel Ziblatt and it sounded like an interesting book and very relevant to my earlier post on The End of Democracy.

I looked on Amazon and most reviews were very favorable although a significant number (maybe 15 %) were very negative. I suspect that some positive and negative reviews were influenced by the political leanings of the reviewers.

I checked and our county library had it but it would take a few days to get it sent to my local library and so I put in a request and waited.

Meanwhile I read a transcript of an interesting interview with the authors on NPR’s Fresh Air.

I eagerly started the book and so far am enjoying it greatly and learning quite a bit. There are both new facts I was unaware of and those I already knew about but put in a different context. The authors cover various international situations where authoritarians ended democracy or failed to do so. Also there is considerable emphasis on President Donald Trump and previous authoritarian events in US history.

I finished the book at posted a review at http://www.jackreidy.com/blog/2019/09/18/democracies-die-saved/
