US Election security

Yes, we need to increase our election security. But there are some who think it unnecessary or perhaps they welcome Russian intervention as it has helped them in the past and they hope it will continue to keep them in power. But that is just my opinion and many agree but I am getting a bit ahead.

We knew as early as 2016 before the election that put President Trump in office and gave Republicans a majority in both parts of Congress. The USA Today article Yes, 17 intelligence agencies really did say Russia was behind hacking starts by telling us that “Donald Trump’s claim that the United States has “no idea” who is behind recent email hacks is just not true.”

In 2017 and 2018 the intelligence community reported on Russian efforts to influence the US elections (see Secure our elections ).

Then we have the Muller report which again documents in detail how the Russians interfered in the 2016 election which was highlighted by his recent Congressional testimony.

The Senate Intelligence Committee adds more about this. It seems worse than many of us thought. The NY Times article Russia Targeted Election Systems in All 50 States, Report Finds starts like this

The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded Thursday that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by Russia in 2016, an effort more far-reaching than previously acknowledged and one largely undetected by the states and federal officials at the time.

But while the bipartisan report’s warning that the United States remains vulnerable in the next election is clear, its findings were so heavily redacted at the insistence of American intelligence agencies that even some key recommendations for 2020 were blacked out.

For those who want to brave the entire report, the PDF is here

Isn’t this a nonpartisan issue all Americans should care about? As far as I know we have not done much to secure our elections. Isn’t it way past time to begin? Better late than never. Better now than later.
