A double disaster but not “real catastrophe”

President Trump insulted Puerto Ricans by calling them lucky and saying they had not faced  “a real catastrophe, like Katrina”.  Yes they are the lucky ones.  No ”real catastrophe” (who am I to contradict the President) but instead the double disaster.

Disaster one was Hurricane Maria with loss of life, loss of power, little food or drinking water, widespread destruction.  Well, you get the idea.

Disaster two was the slow response to help our fellow Americans in Puerto Rico.   Yes it was hard.  It was an island.  You can’t just drive truck there.  The roads were impassable in many cases.  But our country has a Navy capable to transporting supplies across the ocean.  We have a military that can deal with poor, or even no, roads.  So the Trump administration response was the second part of the double disaster.

This from the news this morning :

Three weeks after Hurricane Maria slammed Puerto Rico on Sept. 20, 85 percent of the U.S. territory doesn’t have power, 40 percent of residents don’t have drinkable water, and with so many homes destroyed and conditions improving at a slow pace…

We should do better.
