NOTES (2009):

What follows is a commercial report by Electronic Family Lineages, St. George, UT, on the Reidy family name which was provided at no charge to the Irish Genealogical Society International (IGSI). Jack Reidy and Ray Marshall were co-webmasters of the IGSI site at the time. Jack is webmaster of this site and thanks both the IGSI and Dr Platt (who compiled the report and is now retired) for their help in putting this back on the internet.

Be aware that “Reidyweb” as quoted as a citation in the Reidy report is Jack’s website in 1997, “A Gathering of Reidys”, now at http://www.jackreidy.com/ (see link below). This is probably were you were a few minutes ago unless you came from a search engine or another site.

Here are a couple of links in case you came here from another site and want to visit Jack’s site or you are interest in seeing the IGSI site.

REIDY

HISTORY OF THE SURNAME

The surnames Reidy, Riedy, also O’Reidy, are anglicized version of the earlier Gaelic Riada, and are a family within the Dalcassian sept (see below). Seumas MacManus in his book The Story of the Irish Race, 3rd edition (New York: Irish Publishing Co., 1922) states that the O’Riada may have been related to the Carbri Riada and the Dal Riada areas of County Antrim, and of Scotland. There are no genealogical proofs that either of these is the case, however.

John O’Hart in his Irish Pedigrees 5th ed. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1989), volume 1, pages 69 and 154, describes the Dal Cais, anglicized as Dalcassians, as being descendants from Olioll Olum and Sabh or Sabina, daughter of Conn of the Hundred Battles, and relict of MacNiadh. They had three sons: Eoghan Mor, Cormac Cas and Cian or Kian. According to the will of Olioll Olum, he made a regulation that the kingdom of Munster was to be ruledalternately by one of the posterity of the Eoghan Mor or Cormac Cas. This Cormac Cas was married to Oriund, daughter of the king of Denmark, and by her had a son named Mogha Corb. O’Hart in the pedigree of this family (pages 154-155) contradicts this statement, saying that Cormac Cas was married to Samer, daughter of Fionn MacCumhal, and that she was the mother of Mogha Corb, born in 167 A.D. According to this genealogy, his son was Fear Corb, born 198 A.D., whose son was Aeneas Tireach, born 232 A.D., whose son was Lughaidh Meann, born 286 A.D., who son was Conall Each-luath, born 312 A.D., who son was Cas from which the Dal Cais or Dalcassians descend. He was born in 347 A.D. and had twelve sons. To what extent these ancient pedigrees are accurate can only be determined by studying the procedures by which they were passed from generation to generation.

The Four Masters under the date of 1129 A.D. describe the chief of the O’Riada sept as king of Aradh, a designation applied to the O’Donegans up to 1100 and to O’Brien in the fifteenth century.

The point, then, is made that the Reidy or O’Reidy were Dalcassians in descent. Living as they did in all three counties of west Munster, particularly in County Clare and County Kerry, and accepting the historical realities of the long standing ownership of lands that passed from generation to generation within the various septs of Ireland, it is not unlikely that the Reidy or O’Reidy were descendants from this lineage.

In 1659 the census of the region found that the Reidy and O’Reidy were living principally in County Kerry and County Limerick at that time. Thirty years later, however, The List of Surnames of Irish Septs as given in the Book of Arms, compiled by Sir James Terry, Athlone Herald, in 1690 (now preserved in the British Museum), does not list the Reidy or O’Reidy as one of the principal septs of Ireland, indicating, perhaps, that they were either very small, or were aligned with one of the other larger septs in Munster, possibly the O’Donegans or O’Briens, as noted above.

The Reidy and O’Reidy surnames should not be confused with Roddy or Reddy, even though birth registrars and parish priests have done so, nor as an abbreviation of Mulready, which they are not. However, these surnames should be kept in mind when doing research on the Reidy and O’Reidy, because of the improper recordings that have taken place from time to time in both the civil and ecclesiastical records. Parts of the above were taken from Edward MacLysaght, More Irish Families (Dublin: Irish Academic Press, 1982), page 180. Michael C. O’Laughlin in The Master Book of Irish Surnames (Kansas City: Irish Genealogical Foundation, 1993), pages 28 and 38, also adds McReedy, Rhoddy, Roddie, Rody, and Ruddy to this list of variants which should be considered in doing research on the Reidy or O’Reidy surnames.

An 1890 survey of surnames in Ireland taken by Sir Robert E. Matheson entitled Special Report on Surnames in Ireland (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co.,Inc., 1988) page 69, showed the Reidy to be living in Leinster, Munster, and Connaught, with nearly all of them residing in County Kerry and County Clare.

The Reidy surname spread to the Americas early. Although the passenger lists have not yet been indexed in the vital records below, the surname is found throughout the various shipping collections, showing once again origins in Munster.

In the United States the surname Reidy is found in the Williamsburg district, that “hotbed of rebellion.” Sims’ Life of General Marion states: “the people of Williamsburg were sprung generally from Irish parentage. They inherited incommon with all the descendants of the Irish in America a hearty detestation of the English name and authority. This feeling rendered them excellent patriots and daring soldiers wherever the British lion was the object of hostility.” This is taken from Michael J. O’Brien’s work Irish Settlers in America (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1979), volume 1, pages 27-28.

From the same source (Volume 2, pages 368-369) is the record of Peter Reidy, recorded in the Register of Property of the Inhabitants and Returns and Assessments of Berks County, Pennsylvania, between 1758-1785.

In the United States 1990 Census, the surname Reidy is ranked 10,995th in dispersion out of 90,000 surnames studied by the Census Bureau, indicating a lot of migration to this country from Ireland for this family.

In the genealogical files of Broderbund Software, their Family Finder Index (www.familytreemaker.com) lists over 600 entries for Reidy individuals, taken from census records, Social Security records, marriage records, and pedigrees from their World Family Tree collection. The International Genealogical Index of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City also lists hundreds of Reidy in their files. Also of note is the massive indexing project going on in Ireland of parish, vital, and other genealogical records.

DISTRIBUTION OF THE REIDY FAMILY IN THE UNITED STATES

A very nice colored map, showing the states in which the Reidy family have settled can be found on the Internet at www.hamrick.com/names/

It shows that the surname is most prominent in Massachusetts and New Jersey, followed by lesser concentrations in Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont, and then a minimal distribution in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The 1990 Census study by the U.S. Bureau of the Census lists Reidy as 10,995 outof 90,000 surnames, with an actual total of 72,114 individuals. This shows that the family is proliferating dramatically in this country compared to recent history. For example, The Death Benefits Index of the Social Security Administration lists about 950 Reidy individuals who have died prior to 1994. This index also shows that there are families living in states other than those noted above, although they are statistically insignificant, probably less than 1 in 100,000.

An Internet website is available for the Reidy family, called “A gathering of REIDYs” which also includes the variant spelling of the name that historically, as noted above, do not appear to be related. From the website the entries have been systematically analyzed and broken down for indexing purposes, with additional information being added where appropriate, and the entries being added to the vital records and family history listed below, the source being indicated as Reidyweb. Only the Reidy and Riedy entries were indexed.
