Computer Books - Amazon associated bookstore

These are computer books that I liked and found helpful. As many of you know I have had a website for years but since I have retired decided to move to my own web space (with a little push from Geocities) and improve the site by changing from older versions of HTML into the modern age of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and newer HTML. I'm currently trying to make pages with XHTML but I haven't updated all of them yet.

I liked this for the overview of e-commerce. Told from the point of view of someone dissatisfied with the current problems of the small seller on Ebay, it discusses the option of moving some or all operations to Amazon, Half.com, Craigslist, or establishing your own website. The parts I especially liked were the discussion of the various options within having your own ranging from several e-commerce providers with various degess of help and templates and to a 'roll your own' approach. The discussion includs the pros and cons and costs associated with each approach. I have sold a few things online (mostly eBay and half.com) and was curious about other options.

This was my introduction to CSS. Gave me the confidence and knowledge to re-design my website with CSS. Plenty of examples and style-sheets online so it is easy to learn. This book was recomended by several folks on Linked-In and as I recall they liked the book but were less enthusiastic about the title.

As the book points out, there is no such thing as a bulletproof design. But we can minimize the chance that someone will find a way to make our nicely designed page unreadable. Covers how to be flexible and avoid common pitfalls. I have 2 bools on CSS on my bookshelf. This and the one above. Both are good.

I haven't read this one yet but think it will eventually be my third CSS book.

A beautiful book about creating beautiful website. I did buy it, read it, and enjoy it. But my main concerns to date have been getting the information up and making the website useable. I've probably learned a few things from this book but as you can tell I've not fully implemented the theme of beauty here.

My plans now are to add more features to the site and now I'm reading about PHP and MySQL and starting to use PHP a little. So I'll probably be listing more PHP and MySQL books here in the near future. In addtion to adding features and content I hope to make the site more user friendly. So I am also reading along those lines. So check back, I'll be adding books as I go.

Support your local independent bookstore, if you can

I'm a fan of the local independent bookstore but that doesn't work for everyone. Maybe you want a book they don't carry. Maybe they are too far away and it is easier to buy online. Maybe it is just cheaper online. You have options. Consider buying though this site.
