No excuse absentee voting in PA

No excuse absentee voting in PA

A Pennsylvania Court ruled that the state’s law which allowed no excuse absentee voting violates the state constitution and a constitutional amendment would be needed to modify the voting law. The state law was passed in 2019 by the Republican-controlled legislature with overwhelming Republican support. The lawsuit arguing that the law was unconstitutional was brought by Republican lawmakers. That was a quick change of heart.

Our local NPR station WHYY explains the whole sad situation is an article beginning this way.

Can we keep our republic ?

Can we keep our republic ?

After the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was asked what type of government we would have. He replied “A Republic, if you can keep it.” That is old news. Well over 200 years old.

Now the question to us is ‘ Can we keep our republic ? ’ I asked this several years ago in a different context.

But now the same issue arises again as Republican state legislators pass a host of bills to suppress the vote and even override vote.

Can we keep our republic ? I hope so. It seems now is the time to act to save the republic known as the United States of America

Vote by mail

Vote by mail

Last year Pennsylvania introduced “no excuse” voting by mail. So I guess we are fairly lucky in this state. Many states do not allow mail-in voting.

There is a bill in the Senate that would require states to offer this option in 2020 and have contingency plans for future problems with voting. The bill also provides the states with federal funds to help implement this act. I believe that is an important thing this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 public health emergency.

Think about your votes

Think about your votes

Do you have a Presidential candidate in mind? Do you think he or she can do what is talked about during the campaign?

You should vote. But make sure the vote does what you want. Think about your vote.

It seems to me that if you think Smith would be a good president because he or she favors issues you think important, it makes little sense to vote for Jones for Senate or House if he or she opposes those issues. Of course things could be more complicated and there could be a variety of issues to consider but think about your votes.

This year we are electing all members of the House and a third of the Senate. Everyone voting for President can also vote for the member of the House of Representatives for their district. And about a third of us get to pick and senator. Choose wisely. I think your votes in these races should be consistent with your Presidential vote.

National elections – so many votes

National elections – so many votes

We tend to concentrate on the big one. All of us as Americans get to vote for President. Well all most all of us. You do need to be 18 or over and register to vote. And you must have a proper ID in some states. But my point is there is one president for the entire country and there will be millions of us voting.

But there are other elections that are just as important. Collectively, they may be more important. On the national scene we will be voting for all members of the House of Representatives (all 435 of them) and about a third of the 100 Senators. And all although singly each of these has limited power, collectively they have lots of power.

A President can only do so much without the support of many of them. So when you decide who you think would be the better President, you may want to consider these other elections too.

It is not only important to pick someone who will work with the President of your choice but consider that this person may need to work with the other candidate. Someone who will try to do the right thing for all constituents and for America is clearly the better choice than the strict ideologue or party loyalist.
