Two McBrien – Allingham families of Leitrim and Donegal

Two McBrien – Allingham families of Leitrim and Donegal

These two McBrien – Allingham families have led to some confusion in evaluation of family relationships. I have written about odd coincidences in genealogy before but this one is much more confusing.

I first encountered the family of John McBrien and Elizabeth Allingham when I expanded my study of the genealogy of the Allingham family of the Glencar area of Killasnet parish in County Leitrim Ireland. The first record we have of my great great grandmother Ruth Allingham is her 1854 marriage in the small Church of Ireland near Glencar Lake . In 1856 Elizabeth Allingham (who is probably her sister) married John McBrien in the same church.

Allingham family of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland

Allingham family of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland

I wrote about the Allingham family of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland several times but the last time was late last year.

At that time I identified 4 children including my great grandmother. I think now I have information indicating 8 children and I expect there may be more that I have not yet found. In most cases the evidence is pretty good; in others it is not quite enough. So I’ll have to do another post to bring you up-to date on this.

Thomas Allingham (1798-1883) of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

Thomas Allingham (1798-1883) of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.

Thomas Allingham (c1798-1883) was a farmer in Sracreeghan, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland. This part of the parish was called Glencar or Glenlough.

He had 4 children that we know of but I think there must have been more. Elizabeth Allingham was born about 1826 and married John McBrien. Ruth Allingham was probably born in the 1830s and her marriage to Matthew Greer is Continue reading “Thomas Allingham (1798-1883) of Glencar, Killasnet Parish, Co. Leitrim, Ireland.”

Ruth Allingham Greer (about 1835-1887)

Ruth Allingham Greer (about 1835-1887)

Genealogy facts seems to come in unexpected bunches. For years you try to break a brick wall in your research and suddenly the wall breaks and a flood of new information comes your way.

One brick wall involved Ruth Allingham Greer, my great great grandmother. The first record we have is her marriage to Matthew Greer in 1854 in Glencar, Co Leitrim, Ireland.

From that marriage record, we thought she was probably born around 1835, give or take a few years. We also found records of several births to this couple in Sligo. Continue reading “Ruth Allingham Greer (about 1835-1887)”

Lucy Greer Collins born 1859 Sligo Ireland

Lucy Greer Collins born 1859 Sligo Ireland

Lucy Greer Collins was probably born about 1859. Lucy Greer was probably born in Sligo town, Sligo, Ireland to Matthew Greer and Ruth Allingham of Glencar in County Leitrim.

I had not known of Lucy’s existence before finding an abstract of a New York City marriage record listing parents Matthew Greer and Ruth Aligan (a common misspelling). Continue reading “Lucy Greer Collins born 1859 Sligo Ireland”

Frances Greer and Horace Johnston marry

Frances Greer and Horace Johnston marry

Several weeks ago I had written about the marriage of Frances Greer and Horace Johnston in New York City on December 24, 1892.

I saw an abstracted record on familysearch.org and was pretty sure Frances was a daughter of Matthew Greer and Ruth Allingham of Sligo, Ireland I had not previously known about. Continue reading “Frances Greer and Horace Johnston marry”

John Greer and Julia Mary Hopkins family of New York City

John Greer and Julia Mary Hopkins family of New York City

Lately I’ve been filling in some details on close but not direct ancestors in hopes I’ll find something that gives me some insight or additional direction on my more direct line. So that’s what this is about. One of my great grandmothers was Elizabeth Greer born in Ireland to Ruth Allingham and Matthew Greer.

Elizabeth had an older brother named John Greer who was born in Ireland about 1860. I believe he came to the US in the 1870s and married Julia Mary Hopkins in 1888 in New York City (NYC). Continue reading “John Greer and Julia Mary Hopkins family of New York City”
