Comments are great

I’ve been writing this blog for several years. Sometimes I talk about genealogy (especially my family), sometimes a book review, sometimes just a general comment on current events or whatever is on my mind that day. I like it when people coment. They can agree with me or disagree. all comments are welcome.

Comments are great. A chance to reconsider an opinion. Or at least appreciate the other side of the argument more.

But it is the genealogy post comments I wish to specifically mention today. Usually there is no response. Sometimes it is just something interesting that is related. But the ones that a really exciting is when someone tells me they might be related.

Last week I got one of these. It was related to a short Mckenzie post from over a year ago. The commenter thought she might be related and pointed out something on a record I had but which I had never noticed. Certainly a reasonable case that we are related but nothing definite.

We are emailing back and forth trying to fill out each other’s family tree and find that record which will make this tentative relationship more certain.

Wolfe Tone in America

Wolfe Tone in America

Theobald Wolfe Tone, better known as Wolfe Tone, was co-founder of the United Irishmen and an Irish revolutionary of the late 18th century.

At first this political movement attempted to unite the both the Protestants and Catholics of Ireland and sought reform to the parliament to give the all Irishmen more rights. After several years the leaders of the United Irishmen realized reform was impossible and sought revolution to gain independence for Ireland. Continue reading “Wolfe Tone in America”

An Irish Valentine

An Irish Valentine

I was looking around the internet for an Irish Valentine. That is something appropriate for Valentine’s Day, Irish-style. And I found a new (for me) blog.

What could be better than giving an Irish Valentine for someone of Irish descent or someone fortunate enough to have a Valentine of Irish descent?

Also there is more interesting stuff on that blog. Look around

HBO documentary about progeria

HBO documentary about progeria

Our household subscribed to HBO because there were shows we wanted to watch on this premium cable channel. And these series are wonderful. Different people will like different shows so I won’t bother to list my favorites on HBO.

But we have found the HBO documentaries fascinating. Right now there aren’t any series that we watch but we have kept paying for HBO because of the documentaries. Continue reading “HBO documentary about progeria”

Is spam increasing on blogs?

Is spam increasing on blogs?

I just had a look at my statistics. I use Askimet to detect spam on my blog and to hold it in waiting until I evaluate it. Every once in a while a message is misclassified. That is, a real comment is categorized as spam or spam is classed as a real comment. In any case they are not deleted or published until I have looked and decided. I would say Askimet is correct well over 99% of the time.

But in looking at the stats over the past year, I noticed that the volume of spam has gone way up. A year ago, it was hundreds of spam comments per month and the past few months have been several thousand and the number seems to be increasing.

I’m not sure if this is a general trend or just happening here. Have other bloggers noticed some similar?

Cell Phones – business opportunity for displays

Cell Phones – business opportunity for displays

As an owner of cell phones for about 20 years, I have seen many improvements. But there has been one giant setep backwards. Many cell phones of the 1990s had a black and white display that could be seen in bright sunlight. At some point a long time ago, we seem to have moved to color displays which can not really be seen outdoors unless you find a shady spot. Is there a business opportunity here?

Pete Hamill’s new book

Pete Hamill’s new book

I am a big fan of Pete Hamill’s books. Perhaps in the not-too-distant future, I’ll re-read Forever, or one of his other books and write a review here but for now I just have a question. I understand that he has a new book coming out on immigration and I would like to read it. I had read it is only going to be released as an e-book and I thought it was coming our this fall. Last I read said November 15 but I don’t see anywhere to get it. Does anyone know anything about this book< I did a search and can't find anything current. I also looked at his website and Facebook page but there is no information.

Hello

Hello

Privacy and Facebook

Privacy and Facebook

I saw several interesting commentaries this morning on the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) deeplinks blog. Several were about Facebook and the loss of privacy there and how it changed over time.

The website of the EFF is athttp://www.eff.org/ and the blog is at http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archive and there are several commentaries recently. I won’t list them all here but have a look.

Chester County PA

Chester County PA

I live in Chester County Pennsylvania (USA) and have decided to start a website with Chester County information. That’s in Southeast PA, not too far from Philadelphia.

So far I’ve just done things like local government (townships, boroughs, city) and school districts but intend to add much more – points of interest and so forth, maybe even another blog. So while I’m thinking about what I should do, feel free to add suggestions here. By the way, my new site is http://www.chescopa.com/.
