The Tuesday afternoon ambush

The Tuesday afternoon ambush was the firing of FBI Director James Comey who was conducting an investigation into the Russian interference in the 2016 elections and possible collusion by the Trump administration and campaign.

Why Watergate

It was a very Nixonian move that made me think of the Watergate investigation which happened when I was a young man. We will have to see how this develops but it has the potential to be much worse than Watergate.

Why Tuesday afternoon ambush

There are parallels with the Saturday night massacre. In common you have a sitting President under investigation who fires the investigator. Apparently both hopde that this will make the investigation go away. it did not work that well for President Nixon. We will see how it works out in this case.

It is also a bit different. It did not happen on a Saturday might but on a Tuesday afternoon. And you could hardly call one person losing a job, a massacre. The way it was done is more suggestive an an ambush.

In the Saturday night massacre, an attorney general and an assistant both resigned rather than fire the investigator. They stood on principle. Those were the days when Republicans put principle and country before party.
