Why is President Trump against an independent investigation ?

I don’t understand why President Trump and the Republicans are against an independent investigation.

Our intelligence agencies agree that the Russians interfered in our election. There are suggestions that the Trump campaign may have been aware or perhaps aided in this. But that is far from proven.

We have now learned of multiple contacts between the campaign and the Russians. They may be totally innocent but it looks bad.

To compound the problem President Trump has claimed both that he knows Putin and that he doesn’t (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2016/aug/01/donald-trump/donald-trump-gets-full-flop-whether-hes-had-relati/). His policy toward Russia and his often expressed admiration for Putin seems odd.

Despite many denials several people in his campaign or administration or both either do not recall meeting the Russians or do admit to meeting (after news reports) but do not recall what they talked about.

President Trump has compromised the partisan investigations in Congress and perhaps the FBI investigation. Would anyone but his strongest supporters believe the results of a partisan investigation>

If these contacts are innocent why does the Trump administration not wish to have an independent investigation which can clear them?
