Democratic Presidential primary

I think there are 2 strong candidates in the Democratic Presidential primary. Neither is perfect but both are good. Certainly much better than we’ve seen on the Republican side.

I do not have a vote in the primary. I live in Pennsylvania. You get to vote in the democratic primary if you are a registered Democrat. You get to vote in the Republican primary if you are a registered Republican. If you are neither, you do not get to vote in the primary. I don’t think that is particularly good and I’ll probably write more about it later but I’m digressing from my original purose to discuss the Democratic Presidential primary.

I’ll probably support the democratic candidate in the fall. It may be Hillary Clinton but maybe it will be Bernie Sanders. Maybe neither will get enough primary votes and the convention will pick one of these 2 or maybe even another candidate. It all depends on Democratic primary voters.

On the Republican side, we have Donald Trump and Ted Cruz leading and one of these may be the candidate. I am extremely unlikely to support either. On the other had it could be a contested convention and another candidate may emerge.

Although I lean strongly toward the Democrats, I don’t think it is reasonable to say I have made a firm decision until I know the options (see http://www.jackreidy.com/blog/2016/02/26/yellow-dog-republicans/).

I go back and forth as to which candidate I prefer. I believe Robert Reich got it right when he wrote:

I’ve known Hillary Clinton since she was 19 years old, and have nothing but respect for her. In my view, she’s the most qualified candidate for president of the political system we now have.

But Bernie Sanders is the most qualified candidate to create the political system we should have, because he’s leading a political movement for change.

The upcoming election isn’t about detailed policy proposals. It’s about power – whether those who have it will keep it, or whether average Americans will get some as well.
