Thirteen Ways of Looking by Colum McCann

“Thirteen Ways of Looking” is the latest from Colum McCann. I have prevously written about his novel “TransAtlantic” which made me a fan of McCann’s writing.

“Thirteen Ways of Looking” is different. There is one novella of the same name. It takes up over half the book. And 3 short stories almost complete the book. The book ends with a brief ‘”Author’s Note” which is short and well worth reading. It describes an assault which took place during the writing of this book and in which the author was a victim. The author refers you to his website for the text of his Victim Impact Statement.

As is usual in a collection of shorter works, I enjoyed some of the stories more than others. “Thirteen Ways of Looking”, the longest story, is my favorite. Of the shorter works, “Treaty” was my favorite. But all were very well done and a joy to read. And they can be appreciated on many levels.

For example, “Thirteen Ways of Looking”, the longest story in the book “Thirteen Ways of Looking” takes its title from a poem. I did not know that until I had finished reading and read a few reviews. I am sure that would influence the enjoyment and understanding of those familiar with the poem but I was not one of those. I enjoyed and appreciated the story for itself.

If you are a fan of Colum McCann, do not miss this. If you have not tried his books before, this is your chance to get some of his short fiction and see if you enjoy his style.
