William Greer Scotland to Brooklyn 1849-1943

One branch of my family is descended from Ruth Allingham of Glencar, Leitrim, Ireland who married Matthew Greer.

William Greer (1849-1943) was Ruth’s stepchild. Born of Matthew Greer and Jane Burkhard in Scotland on Feb 14 1849 (according to his death cert). He was raised in Sligo, Ireland by Ruth and Matthew. It seems he was the first in the Allingham-Greer family to emigrate to New York (about 1872) and played an important part in gradually bringing over the rest of the family. He married Elizabeth Farrington around 1875.

Children of William and Elizabeth

William Alfred Greer (1877-1898) Born Dec 31, 1877 Enlisted in Navy in 1894 as Apprentice 3rd class. Died Feb 15 1898 when USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor. His name is inscribed on USS Maine Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery (William A. Greer, Apprentice First Class). Remains may be among the many unknowns in that area of the cemetery.

Jane Elizabeth Greer (1880-1963). Born 12 Feb 1880. Married John Walther about 1906. Died 1963 and buried in William Greer’s plot in Green-wood as Jennie E Walther.

Martha Greer (1881-1882). Dates from William Greer’s stone.

Charles Proctor Greer (1883-1937). Married Agnes Siemerman in 1905. Oddly, the NY census of 1905 records him once with William’s family and once with Agnes. Buried in William Greer’s plot at Green-wood.

Arthur Greer (1885-1969). Born 11 Apr 1885 in Kings Co, NY. Married Ruth Letitia Tracey in 1913. Lived in Nassau Co. Children: Arthur H Greer and Edwin A. Greer.

Margaret Greer (1890-1979). Married Edward Otto Kaupman in 1910. Son William Kaupman moved to Georgia, had several children. Margaret died in Fulton co GA in 1979.

Herbert Waldo Greer (1892-1954) Born Sep 28 1892 in Brooklyn, NY. No known children or marriages. Died in 1954 and buried in William Greer’s plot in Green-wood.

I hope this brief outline gives enough information that anyone with a connection will see it. If not, I’d be glad to answer questions or expand on any part of this. And other comments are welcome as well.

  1. Hi, I just added a photo of the marker for this family buried in Green-Wood Cemetery at Find A Grave. It’s memorial # 154915698. All the best, Christine
