Horace A. Greer and Sadie French

It seems certain that Horace Greer married Sadie French. But who is this Sadie French? I looking for more evidence (maybe even some proof). But so far I have pile of circumstantial evidence.

By the way, my interest is Horace A. Greer who moved from New York City to Los Angeles, got into the Mabel Normand Hollywood scandal in the 1920s, and kept a low profile after that. For more on Horace, just google Horace A. Greer. Pair it with Mabel Normand if you like but that is not needed as there are few enough Horace A. Greer high ranking hits. I suppose most other search engines would give similar results.

Back to the evidence. Horace A. Greer and Sadie French were living in the same house through the 30s and 40s. The 1940 census lists both at the same address and in the same household in the Lanning Area Apartments at 1129 North Madison Avenue, Los Angeles, California. They say there were in the same house in 1935.

When I follow Horace A. Greer and Sadie French forward in the voting register and the city directories, he appears at the same address as Sadie French for several years and then in the early 1950s appears to be married. At least, she uses a last name of Greer. He nearly always goes by Horace A. Greer. She goes by Signa, Sadie, and Sadee with middle initials of E, F, and V. It seems likely this is Sadie French I mentioned earlier but I have no documentary evidence.

A Sadie V. Greer died on Feb 13 1965. It seems likely to me that this is Horace’s wife but I’ve not been able to find the documents to prove it. I suspect a good obituary or death certificate might do the trick. She was probably born Signa Victoria Fallgren. See FindAGrave.

This idea is supported by the findings that she was living with her father John W. Falgren in the 1930 census and the California, Death Index gives her mother’s maiden name as Stromber which seems to approximately match Mr Falgren’s wife (Ida Stromberg). Sadie French is listed as a survivor in Mr. and Mrs Falgren’s obituaries.

I’ve followed records for this family and have seen spellings of Fallgren, Falgren, and Falgrin fairly often.

I am also trying to find out a bit more about how Signa Falgrin became Sadie French. The only good candidate I’ve found so far is Sadie Evahn of Spokane WA who may be the Sadie Evahn who married PF French in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. But then that makes the question how did Sadie Falgrin become Sadie Evahn?

It seems like the more you learn in genealogy, the more questions arise.

Anyone with any ideas about Horace, Sadie, or where I might look for relevant records?
