2014 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction – Toms River catastrophe

Congratulations to Dan Fagin for winning the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction for a great book on the environmental catastrophe at Toms River, NJ. I previously reviewed Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation by Dan Fagin here .

I believe this is an important book. It is a long book but well worth the time required to read it. It is a story of environmental pollution and the resulting excess of cancer. It is also a story of people and a story of industry. It is a complicated story and Dan Fagin does a great job in explaining the issues. This is one of those rare books that is detailed enough for a professional in the area but readable enough for a general reader with an interest in the area.

Although the environmental catastrophe detailed here resulted in one the largest financial settlements in such cases, the story is not well known. It is a cautionary story that needed to be told well and Dan Fagin did just that. So if haven’t yet done so, now is a good time to read Toms River: A Story of Science and Salvation by Dan Fagin.
